Longtime Red Deer - Mountain View MP Earl Dreeshen has announced that he will not be running in the next federal election.
"It has been my honour and privilege to continue this legacy by representing the great people of Red Deer and Red Deer–Mountain View for the past 16 years by bringing local issues and concerns to the national stage," he said.
In a statement released Tuesday night, Dreeshen says it's time for a new Conservative government and he has the utmost confidence in leader Pierre Poilievre.
"I am so proud of the Conservative common-sense renaissance he has led from coast to coast. With the winds of change also comes the need for new voices, new perspectives, and new ideas," he stated.
Dreeshen highlighted several accomplishments over the years including helping to secure federal funding for the Red Deer Regional Airport expansion, assisting in bringing the Canada Winter Games to Red Deer, securing federal economic stimulus for businesses and municipalities, and working with Olds College, Red Deer College and Red Deer Polytechnic to gain federal assistance to help advance their high standards of education.
"My Private Members Bill, C444, changed the Criminal Code of Canada with respect to the crime of impersonating an officer," he said. "This historic change has made a significant difference for victims and for the administration of justice."
Dreeshen served on the Committee that eliminated the Canadian Wheat Board, was the Vice-chair and Deputy Shadow Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, and was part of Parliamentary Committees on Agriculture, Aboriginal Affairs, Health, International Trade and, most recently, Natural Resources.
"To my constituents, thank you for electing me and allowing me to serve as your Member of Parliament. I will proudly continue to serve you until the next federal election," he said.
Due to Justin Trudeau's decision to step down as Prime Minister and his decision to prorogue Parliament, it's uncertain when the next federal election will be held. Election rules state the vote should come by October at the latest.
