Souris Valley Museum has received a $10,000 donation from Kingston Midstream to help restore its historic ALCO locomotive, an important piece of the region’s mining heritage.

Melanie Memory, director of the Souris Valley Museum, said the fundraising efforts for the locomotive have been ongoing.

To date, the museum has raised $22,917, which includes the $10,000 donation from Kingston Midstream and $12,000 from its own funds. "We raised $12,300, and as a board, we decided to match that amount from our savings," Memory explained.

The contribution is part of Kingston Midstream's commitment to supporting local communities through its Richardson Foundation, which provides funding opportunities to organizations offering community-based services.

Though the initial goal was $35,000, the museum now anticipates the total cost could be closer to $50,000. "As a non-profit, we've decided to contribute more of our own funds, with $15,000 likely coming from our savings," Memory added.

The museum has explored other funding sources, including applying for support from the South East Economic Partnership (SSEP). "They’ve indicated an interest in supporting us, and they’ve asked me to present to their board this month to discuss our long-term goals and plans," Memory said.

Additionally, the museum is working with the mining union to explore options for replacing parts on the display before the sandblasting begins.

There’s also potential for future funding to expand the display. "We need repairs to some of the glass and other components," Memory noted, adding that they’re also looking at funding for new programming and exhibits. "One of my goals is to create a coal and energy display since that's such an important part of the city’s history. We receive many visitors who are interested in learning more about it."

Memory highlighted that mining plays a significant role in the city’s heritage.

The museum will continue fundraising throughout the year, with the hope of starting restoration work in the spring. "We're also waiting for the city budget, as we need to ensure we have the necessary operating funds for next year," she said.
