Red Deer Mayor Ken Johnston announced Wednesday afternoon that he will not seek re-election for the 2025 municipal election.
“After much thought and deep conversations with my family, I've made the difficult decision to retire from public life,” Johnston said on social media. "I'm excited for the future of Red Deer, and I'm at peace knowing we've built a strong foundation together."
In a letter addressed to Red Deer residents, Johnston expressed his gratitude to city staff, and council members, praising their passion, energy, patience, wisdom, and commitment.
“You joined me in creating a city that is stronger and more united, where different perspectives are respected and celebrated,” he said. “You have been honest, loyal, and true, and I am proud of what we’ve accomplished together.”
However, Johnston’s deepest thank-you went to Red Deer residents.
“You placed your trust in me, and it has been the greatest honour of my life to serve you.”
“Together, we have shared in a vision of a greater Red Deer, one that continues to take shape through your dedication, passion, and hard work,” he said. “You have been with me every step of the way, offering advice, prayer, correction, and care. I will be forever grateful for your support.”
While reflecting on his journey in municipal politics, Johnston explained that pragmatism, peace, and gratitude is guiding him as he transitions into a new phase of life.
“I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to serve as your Mayor and for all the incredible people I've met along the way. I am grateful to my family, my council, my staff, and the citizens of Red Deer,” he said. “Together, we’ve made lasting progress on key issues, and I am proud of the foundation we’ve laid for the next Mayor.”
