Alberta’s government is investing $1.5 million to expand cancer support services for patients and caregivers in rural and remote areas. The funding will support Wellspring Alberta, which provides emotional and mental health support, including counselling, peer services, and caregiver assistance.
These services help cancer patients navigate physical and cognitive challenges caused by treatment, complementing traditional medical care.
"This funding will improve support access for rural families facing cancer, reducing the burden of travel and increasing mental health services," said Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Health.
Wellspring Alberta offers over 70 programs through virtual platforms and local hubs in Calgary, Edmonton, and rural Alberta. The funding will ensure patients and caregivers in rural areas can receive care without needing long-distance travel.
"By working closely with Alberta Health Services, we provide complementary support that alleviates the need for acute care services while ensuring patients and families have the emotional and practical help they need," said Bill Gilliland, Wellspring Alberta board chair.
The $1.5 million investment will be spread over 15 months and aims to improve health outcomes for cancer patients, reduce strain on Alberta’s acute care system, and provide critical support during the cancer journey, especially in rural areas where access to specialized care can be difficult.
