Red Deer Public Schools (RDPS) is sparking new opportunities for Grade 11 and 12 students by launching a Fire Academy.
In partnership with the City of Red Deer Emergency Services (RDES), the program combines classroom learning with real-world, hands-on firefighting training and experience.
Through the program, students will earn high school credits, while gaining accreditation and practical skills to prepare them for a career in firefighting.
“We’re thrilled to offer students this fantastic opportunity to learn from the professionals at RDES,” said Dan Lower, Deputy Superintendent of RDPS. “This partnership is vital to the program’s success. It not only provides our students with invaluable knowledge and hands-on experience but also opens doors to future careers in firefighting.”
Students enrolled in the Fire Academy will participate in dynamic classroom lessons at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School and hands-on exercises at the City of Red Deer’s Ed Howell Emergency Services training facility.
Each cadet will have their own gear and necessary equipment to ensure safety and authenticity during training.
The program is capped at 20 students annually to ensure personalized attention and high-quality training. Tuition for the Academy is $2,000 annually, covering the cost of equipment, uniforms, and specialized instruction.
“This is an incredible opportunity for anyone interested in joining an in-demand, continually growing industry,” said Deputy Chief Tyler Pelke, RDES. “In addition to the incredible financial value of the Fire Academy, this collaboration allows Red Deer youth to challenge themselves mentally and physically, build leadership skills, and gain first-hand scientific application of chemistry, biology, and physics.”
Program applications will open in March.
Interested students and families are encouraged to attend an open house at Fire Station #3 (100 Lees Street, Red Deer) on March 11 from 6:30-7:30 p.m., where program details and application requirements will be discussed.
Applications will be accepted until April 11, for the 2025-2026 school year.
“The Fire Academy is an investment in our students and our community,” Lower said. “This program not only gives students a direct pathway into firefighting but also builds essential skills like teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience.”
