The Southeast Advocates Youth with Barriers Transitions Program is looking for community support as it partners with the Estevan Humane Society to provide valuable work experience for students.

Shayla Hagel, a transitions consultant for the program, works with high school students facing barriers such as autism, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), ADHD, and mental health challenges. Hagel helps these students transition from high school to post-secondary education or into the workforce.

“The goal is to break down barriers that might be impeding their ability to join the workforce after high school,” said Hagel. “We focus on volunteering and developing employability skills like time management, communication, and task completion.”

Every Thursday, Hagel takes a group of students to volunteer at the Estevan Humane Society, where they gain hands-on experience while helping the shelter care for its animals. However, to keep the volunteer program going, the program is asking for donations from the community.

“We need supplies such as cleaner, dish soap, bleach, puppy pee pads, and dog and cat toys,” said Hagel. “The donations will ensure that students have what they need during their volunteer time and that the shelter can access these supplies easily.”

Donations can be dropped off at the Southeast Advocates office at 1112 6th St. in Estevan between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The office is closed from noon to 1 p.m. for lunch. Donations will be accepted until Feb. 7.

Hagel emphasized that only supplies are being accepted at this time. The goal is for students to focus on organizing and delivering the items to the shelter.

“If we can get these supplies, it’ll allow the students to focus on their tasks, and it will benefit the shelter as well,” she said.

The program is helping students build skills that will serve them in their careers and break down barriers to employment. The Estevan Humane Society is one of the many community organizations benefiting from the students' hard work and dedication.
