The southeast has been coasting through the week with some above-average temperatures and clear skies, but the coming weekend will see a change in fortunes with chilly air and blowing snow.
That begins tomorrow with a system set to hit in the morning, which will persist into Saturday.
Environment Canada Meteorologist Stephen Berg gives the rundown for the first of a bitter weekend.
"There's a bit of a brief cooler period for Friday before the weekend, but there's going to be a bit of a temperature rise on Saturday, but that kind of comes in with a low-pressure system that will bring about four to 8 centimetres of snow for your region starting Friday morning and going until Saturday night."
That snow will be getting whipped up over the day, says Berg, with visibility possibly being affected.
"Initially there'll be some easterly or southeasterly wind gusts to about 50 to 60 kilometres per hour Friday afternoon to Saturday morning and then after this low-pressure system leaves your area northwesterly wind gusts will be coming into about 60 to 70 kilometres per hour Saturday night into Sunday afternoon, which might give some blowing snow and reduced visibilities. Those northwesterly will bedropping the temperature quite a bit from Sunday on to kind of the middle of next week."
Once the blowing snow moves out of the area we'll see that sharp drop in temperatures persist for a bit.
"It looks like kind of from Sunday till Wednesday or Thursday of next week's temperatures, high temperatures for Monday and Tuesday might be between -20 and -23, with the overnight lows close to -30 on a couple of days there," said Berg, "A couple of early mornings might be pushing the warning criteria for cold conditions depending on how much wind there is."
With the wind expected to blow around snow Berg stresses that people should keep an eye on conditions before they head out over the weekend.
"The main story I guess would be to make sure that people are driving to the conditions given the blowing snow. There might also be some slick roads with temperatures getting not too far away from zero on Saturday, so might have a bit of ice on the roads and be pretty slick, so people need to slow down if they're out on the roads there."
