There are a variety of events and activities happening throughout Central Alberta in celebration of Family Day (Feb. 17). 

Family Day events include: 

(Due to cold weather, check with local organizers to make certain these events are still happening)

 

Feb. 14 - Feb. 15

City of Red Deer

Polar Glow

Time: 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Location: Ross Street Patio and Veterans Park

Ice sculpting, glowing art installations, hot chocolate and marshmallow roast, crafts, and entertainment.

Crimson Lake

Winterfest 

Time: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.  

Location: Pioneer Ranch (403048 Buster Creek Road) 

Freezin’ for a Reason Charity Polar Bear Dip, carnival games, sleigh rides, ice fishing, skating, and cross-country skiing. 

 

Red Deer County

Family Day Event

Time: 12 p.m. - 3 p.m.

Location: Springbrook Community Rink

Chili cook off, wagon rides, s'mores at the fire pits, and family photo opportunities. 

 

Feb. 15 - 16 

Town of Sylvan Lake  

Ice Dragon Boat Festival 

Location: Lakeshore Drive 

Ice Dragon Boat Races, entertainment, poutine contest, lake skating, fire dancer performances, face painting, fireworks and more. 

 

 

Feb. 17 

Town of Blackfalds 

Winterfest 

Time: 12 p.m. - 3 p.m. 

Location: Eagle Builders Centre 

Free family skating, Blackfalds Fire Department BBQ, and family bingo. 

Blackfalds Bulldogs vs. Brooks Bandits, 4 p.m., Skate with the Bulldogs.

 

Town of Ponoka

Skijoring event 

Time: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Location: Calnash Ag Event Centre

A unique winter sport where skiers are pulled by horses, spectators can participate by bringing their downhill skis or snowboards.

Enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides, a bouncy castle, bonfire, and demonstrations by the Ponoka 4-H equine group.

 

Free Public Swim

Time: 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Location: Ponoka Aquaplex (5315 46 Avenue)

Enjoy a free public swim. Voluntary donations of non-perishable food items will be accepted for the Ponoka Food Bank.

 

Free Public Skating

Time: 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Location: Ponoka Arena Complex (4410 54 Street)

Free public skating on the large ice surface. Donations of non-perishable food items will be accepted for the Ponoka Food Bank. 

 

Outdoor Skating

Enjoy outdoor skating anytime.  

Indoor change rooms can be accessed at the north end of the Ponoka Arena Complex from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

 

Light display and skating trail

Location: Lions Centennial Park (at Highway 2A and 54 Street)

Experience a colourful light display and skate on the ice trail through the park.

 

Cross-country ski trails 

Location: Ponoka Golf Club

The starting and finishing point is below the main parking lot near the member cart shed.

 

Tobogganing

 Tobogganing at the Tom Hamilton Memorial Hill: Located in the southwest corner of Froman Industrial Park, behind the former Siding 14 Brewery building on 36 Avenue.

 

Walking trails

Explore the walking trails in Ponoka’s Battle River Valley.

Town of Innisfail  

Family Curling 

Time: 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. 

Location: Innisfail Curling Club  

Learn to curl at the Innisfail Curling Club. All equipment will be provided. 

 

Helping Hand Fund 3-on-3 Family Day Tournament  

Time: 10 a.m. 

Location: Innisfail Twin Arena 

Funds raised will support the Dean Turnquist Helping Hand Fund.  

 

Family Day at the Innisfail Arena  

Time: 12 p.m. - 3 p.m. 

Location: Innisfail Arena 

The Innisfail Kinsmen will provide a BBQ at the Innisfail Twin Arena. 

Enjoy a warmup station, wagon rides, and an all-ages free skate. 

 

Family day Swim 

Time: 1 p.m. - 2 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. 

Location: Innisfail Aquatic Centre 

Enjoy a free swim. Food and monetary donations will be accepted for the Innisfail Food Bank. 

 

Outdoor Skating 

Time: All day  

Location: Northwest side of the Innisfail Twin Arena 

Experience outdoor skating at the boarded rink and skating loop.

Location: Credit Union Co-op Aquatics Centre
