The Red Deer & District Chinese Community Society is hosting a Lunar New Year Festival this Saturday (Feb. 8).
The event starts at 5 p.m. at the Festival Hall in Red Deer (4214 58 St.).
"This is one of the biggest celebrations basically all across the year," said President Lawrence Lee. "It's really a 16-day celebration that starts out early and then many traditions following those times...One of the things that really is engrained in my upbringing and all over the world with members of the Asian community is just enjoying the reunion dinner."
Lee says the celebration will kick off with a lion dance.
"This year we're going to have five lions come in from a professional troupe down in Calgary," he explained.
Dinner and performances, including martial arts, signing and traditional Chinese instruments, will follow the lion dance. Children will receive a red envelope containing lucky money and treats.
2025 is the Year of the Snake, one of 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac. Lee notes the Year of the Snake has many blessings including longevity, health, and peace depending on what year you were born in.
Limited tickets are available by texting 403-318-8862.
Tickets are $30 for adults, $20 for Seniors (65+), $15 for Youth (6 - 12) and $10 (Children - 5 and under).
