Youth football players are able to get a headstart on conditioning before the football season as winter workouts are being held here in Estevan.
Christian Pfeifer is leading the coordination of those, with a number of exercises for the kids to try out.
He says that the program is looking to teach the basics of being active to those kids.
"So basically all this is kind of an introduction to the very basics of football. We're not doing any football-specific skills or anything like that. It's strength and conditioning, so we're just getting the kids out, we're getting them moving, getting them stretching, teaching them how to do all of that properly for when the season comes along."
With the event seeing kids looking to join football programs from 10-14 years old, Rfiefer says they were working with a bit of an age range.
As the program goes on Pfeifer says he hopes this gives those kids a good basis for the drills they'll see during football practice.
"The plan especially for today is just kind of introducing the kids to conditioning and stretching and strength training. I'm not expecting them to, you know, go home and start a training regiment or anything like that."
"I guess really what I'm hoping to get out of this is come the season time when these kids go and play the organized football is that the coaches who are out there, they don't have to explain how to do a push-up properly. They don't have to explain how to do a walking lunge properly so that you're getting the most out of your body when you're doing this kind of work."
With six more events planned out, Pfeifer says he hopes to see plenty of kids come out and get ready for the season.
"There are no sign-ups for these winter workouts. It's basically you come and we'll get you working out. We have it on our Facebook page or you can definitely just get ahold of me at 306-471-9695. I'm always open to answering any questions."
The sessions will be held until March 13th every Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the Westview School Gym.
