The Alberta Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) has confirmed that 31 breach notices have been filed across Alberta educational institutions following the PowerSchool cybersecurity breach.
According to one breach notice received by the OIPC, the compromised data includes names, phone numbers, dates of birth, genders, grades, school-issued email addresses, Alberta student ID numbers, and school-issued IDs. Health-related information, such as allergies, medication, medical conditions, personal health numbers, physician contact details, and guardian information, was also exposed.
PowerSchool, a widely used cloud-based platform for managing student data, reported that unauthorized personal information was exfiltrated through a community-focused customer support portal. The breach affected students, educators, and staff members from multiple Alberta educational institutions.
"We are in the early stages of our review," said Alberta’s Information and Privacy Commissioner Diane McLeod. "We are coordinating with privacy regulators across Canada to understand the full scale of the breach and ensure those affected are properly protected."
PowerSchool’s Response and Protection Measures
In response to the breach, PowerSchool has offered those impacted two years of free identity protection and credit monitoring services, regardless of whether SINs were involved. Affected individuals are encouraged to enroll before May 30, 2025, to ensure they are fully protected.
PowerSchool’s Experian Identity Protection and TransUnion Credit Monitoring services are available, with specific enrollment instructions provided. Those affected are strongly urged to enroll to safeguard their personal data.
