The Red Deer Rebels earned a hard fought 3-1 win over the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings Friday night at the Centrium.
With the win, the Rebels ended a nine-game losing streak versus Edmonton dating back to January 2024.
Gavin Hodnett netted the Oil Kings only goal of the game on the power play in the first period to open up the scoring.
It would be all Red Deer starting in the second, with Doogan Pederson going end -to-end and beating Edmonton netminder Alex Worthington bar-down to get the Rebels on the board.
Later in the second, Kalan Lind buried a rebound for his seventh of the season to put the home side up 2-1.
Talon Brigley would add an empty-netter late in the game to seal the victory.
Red Deer goalie Chase Wutzke held his ground in the final frame, making 12 of his 25 saves in the third.
Tensions would boil over as the final horn sounded resulting in 16 roughing penalties being assessed to end the game.
The Rebels went 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Oil Kings finished the night 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
The rematch goes Monday afternoon at the Centrium with Sockey Day in Red Deer in partnership with the United Way Central Alberta. Puck drop is at 2 p.m.
Fans are invited to bring new socks for families in need across central Alberta, and to stick around for the postgame Paint the Ice.
