With warm weather in the forecast, Sunday will be the perfect opportunity to celebrate wonders of winter in Wakaw.
The town will be holding a community celebration for the grand opening of the warmup chalet at the outdoor rink on Dr. Scott Crescent.
Dwane Burke from the Town of Wakaw says there are plenty of activities for families to enjoy, including skating on the outdoor rink, tobogganing on the snow hill, there will also be an outdoor campfire so people can enjoy roasting marshmallows. There will also be some hot chocolate for everyone to enjoy.
Burke noted the warmup chalet was built a couple of years ago, but the town didn’t have the chance to hold a grand opening with a lack of winter, last year.
“That shack or chalet as we like to call it is completely insolated building that has heat in it.”
He added, “When the Wakaw and District Recreation Board got this outdoor rink space going, they wanted to add this chalet for people to utilize to help invite more people to the space to be active in the wintertime.”
Burke said the chalet became fully operational this year with the addition of power to the facility.
With the community celebration, Burke explains that it’s providing a thank you to all the residents and businesses that helped the construction of the rink and chalet, whether it was through labour or a financial contribution.
Everyone is welcome to attend the community celebration from 1-3 on Sunday afternoon. There will also be skates and helmets available for anybody who is looking to go for a skate but doesn’t own any equipment.
