Clearwater County in partnership with Alberta Forestry and Parks have developed the Nordegg Wildfire Mitigation Strategy (WMS) to enhance community safety.

The strategy identifies priority areas near Nordegg where vegetation reduction is required to mitigate wildfire risks.

In December 2024, Clearwater County Council applied for $200,000 in grant funding from the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA) for vegetation and fuel management adjacent to Nordegg’s north subdivision.

The county was successful in acquiring the FRIAA grant, and the Nordegg FireSmart Project is set to begin at the end of February on the first unit area of priority.

Work is expected to take up to 10 weeks, depending on weather conditions and contractor availability.

To reduce the wildfire threat to the community, the unit of the Nordegg FireSmart Project will use selective mulching to treat hazardous fuels in the areas identified in the WMS.
