Freezing rain is a possibility with the upcoming system.

One unexpected part of being out of the cold is some rain which is expected to be passing over the southeast on Monday.

That's less than a week after record-breaking cold was seen, with the sudden shift in temperatures also seeing a shift in expected precipitation.

Andy Yun, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, gives a look at the rain coming in.

"There's a weak low-pressure system that's going to be forming over southern Alberta on the weekend and that'll just kind of cruise through southern Saskatchewan on Monday and pretty much be out of the region by Monday evening into Tuesday. So could bring some rain."

"Even though air temperatures are going to be on the warm side, we're looking at highs about between 3 and 5. The danger is that our road surfaces and ground surfaces still fairly cold and certainly colder, metal surfaces like vehicles and everything, they'll be below freezing, so there's a chance that some of this rain could freeze on contact and and cause some hazardous icing conditions."

Yun says he doesn't anticipate the system to be strong with just a bit of rain coming over the southeast.

"Right now it looks like it's going to be more spotty. We are looking at probably an area of more organized freezing rain, but that kind of risk is more over the northern grain belt at this time and that's associated with the stronger low-pressure system that will be moving through that area."

"But through the South, this system looks like it's moving fairly fast and kinda weak at this point. So yeah, I think something might go through really quickly. But it won't be certainly long-lasting or persistent."

With a good chance of rain to freeze over on Monday Yun gives the advice of checking highway conditions to see if black ice has settled anywhere.

"My advice is, before you head out, certainly check your updated forecast for current conditions and if things get bad enough, there're certainly be advisories or warnings issued by Environment Canada for the local area. So again, stay tuned and be aware of the weather before you head out and go anywhere."

Yun says one silver lining to the raincloud coming in is that the current warm weather will likely last us until at least the end of February.
