Lacombe and District Volunteer Link is looking to extend its volunteer roster.
The non-profit organization was founded in 2004 by several local churches. It's currently run out of the basement of St. Cyprian's Anglican Church in Lacombe.
"We found that there was a need in Lacombe and area for people who are seniors or on low incomes or don't drive, who need to get to doctors, medical appointments and find it very difficult to do so at times," said Office Coordinator Jean Cheek.
She notes without a bus service, getting around town can be tough for some people and taxis are quite expensive.
Cheek says they currently have around 25 volunteers and are looking to add at least five more.
"If you like to drive, it's a great way to spend some time and you get to meet new people," she commented. "It can develop into fellowships or friendships. It's a great program."
In the past, the service was run by volunteers who were part of the churches involved but has since opened up to anyone in the community.
Member churches donate $1,000 towards the program and are granted a board position for a two-year term. Funds from that donation are given to a benevolent fund run by Lacombe FCSS which helps people who are in financial need.
Volunteers who sign up have the flexibility of driving on their own accord and are not required to maintain a scheduled workload.
Cheek says they'd like to expand the service to include shopping and visitations but don't have enough volunteers at the current time to cover that.
Most of the trips are within Lacombe and local area, however there are some people who need rides to Calgary or Edmonton which could mean an all-day excursion.
For those longer trips, clients are expected to pay for gas.
Lacombe and District Volunteer Link also has funds to reimburse local expenses if requested by the volunteers.
