The Red Deer Public Schools (RDPS) Board of Trustees reviewed the division’s education plan, along with the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Learning Services annual report during the Feb. 12 meeting.   

Here are the meeting highlights:   

Education Plan Update Quarterly Report   

The Board of Trustees was presented with the Education Plan Quarterly Report, which provides a comprehensive overview of the division’s progress and initiatives outlined in the Education Plan. The Education Plan is grounded in the five domains of the Alberta Education Assurance Framework.  

Updates included:  

Student Achievement and Growth   

  • The WITS Program was introduced to students in K-5 during Bully Prevention Week in November. Reports so far have shown the program is a positive addition.   

  • Thirteen students are enrolled in the Veterinary Tech Assistant Program at Olds College.   

  • A group of 15 students from Normandeau and Glendale attended a one-day trade camp hosted by the Central Alberta Collegiate Institute in January. A second group of 15 students from Westpark Middle, Central Middle, and GH Dawe will attend the camp next month. A similar camp was held at Red Deer Polytechnic for Grade 9-10 students.  

Teaching and Leading   

  • Four schools will present at a Board Meeting regarding professional development that identify, develop, and implement high-leverage strategies.  

Learning Supports  

  • Budget conversations with administrators and the Teacher Voice committee have occurred, with further engagements occurring over the next six weeks to help inform future budget decisions.  

Governance  

  • The Division is working on an Engagement Plan that will survey stakeholders about a variety of topics throughout the year.   

  • A new Division Satisfaction Survey has been created and is in the final stages of review.  

First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Learning Services Report  

Associate Superintendent of Technology and Information Services Ron Eberts, along with the First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Learning Services team presented the First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Learning Services Report (FNMI) and covered the following topics:  

  • Achievement and Completion Assurance Measures   

  • Foundational Knowledge & Teacher Capacity   

  • Curriculum & Teacher Capacity   

  • New Curriculum Support & Implementation Community Connections   

  • Student Support and Cultural Programming  

Field Study approved  

The Board approved Westpark Middle’s STEAM field study to Florida in February 2026. The trip will accommodate 44 students and offer many educational and unique experiences that relate to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. Locations visited will include the Kennedy Space Center, Midway Airboats, Hollywood Studios, Busch Gardens, Disney World, and EPCOT, among others.
