On Wednesday, the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) shared what they hope to see in the 2025 provincial budget when it comes to education.

According to the ATA Albertans need to remember this number: $11.35 billion.

"Albertans need to remember this number: $11.35 billion. Tomorrow (Thurs), when the finance minister stands before the legislature and delivers the budget, be aware that anything less than $11.35 billion in total operational dollars for public education means that the province is deliberately and shamefully underfunding 90 per cent of Alberta’s students."

They shared that this figure would represent a $1.55 billion increase in overall education spending over current levels. This amounts to around $9.56 per student each school day, based on projected enrollment for 2025–2026.

“A properly funded public education system means manageable class sizes, supports for complex needs for our students who require them, and resources that help students learn,” stated ATA president Jason Schilling.

Alberta has the lowest operating spending per student of any jurisdiction, according to the ATA. they also shared that in addition to being overcrowded, the classrooms are understaffed and devoid of supplies and assistance.

"The province has the means to fix this crisis. Our students deserve better."

Schilling shared that teachers and school administrators are struggling to fill in the cracks.

"If we do not see a substantial investment in public education, these cracks will only grow larger. We have reached our threshold of doing more with less.”

Although $11.35 billion is a substantial investment, it is the result of years of underfunding in spite of growing expenses and a rise in student enrollment mentioned by the ATA. The cost to Alberta of not making investments in the future would be far higher.

The Alberta Teachers’ Association, as the professional organization of teachers, promotes and advances public education, supports teachers’ professional practice and serves as the advocate for its 51,000 members.
