Red Deer Public Schools (RDPS) high school students and their families are invited to a Fire Academy open house today (March 11).

Event attendees will have an opportunity to get detailed information on the program, learn about requirements, see the gear, and meet the professionals.

The Fire Academy is designed for Grade 11 and 12 students who are interested in a firefighting or emergency services career.

“The Fire Academy is an exciting opportunity for students to gain real-world experience while still in high school,” said Dan Lower, Deputy Superintendent. “We encourage anyone interested to come and learn more about this incredible program.”

The academy is in partnership with RDPS and the City of Red Deer Emergency Services (RDES) and features classroom learning with hands-on firefighting training and experience at the Ed Howell Emergency Services training facility.

Through the program, students will earn high school credits and gain accreditation and practical skills to prepare them for a career in firefighting.

The academy will launch in the 2025-2026 school year.

Applications for the program will open following the open house. To ensure high-quality training, the program capacity is 20 students.

The open house will be held at Fire Station #3 (100 Lees Street) at 6:30 p.m.
