Areas of Central Alberta saw some significant snowfall over the early part of the day on Monday.

Justin Shelley is a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

"We did see some decent accumulations occur. It looks like Rocky Mountain House towards Sundre, about 5 cm had fallen this morning, maybe a bit more," he said. "One of the stations further west towards Nordegg, it looks like they had upwards of 15 cm of snow."

Conditions are expected to improve throughout the day.

Shelley says Central Alberta will see some cooler weather over the next few days.

"Daytime highs near or just above the freezing mark, which is where we should be on average for this time of year."

Overnight lows throughout the week will remain steady near -10.

He notes an upper ridge will start to rebuild over the region towards the weekend bringing with it warmer temperatures, possibly in the double digits.

Shelley says Central Alberta will likely see a return to winter early next week, however, with a low-pressure system bringing much colder temperatures into the region with the possibility of between 5 cm and 10 cm of snow.

Environment and Climate Change Canada says the Red Deer region received 5.7 mm of precipitation in February, which is about 50 per cent of normal.

The mean temperature for the month was -15.8 degrees. The normal mean for February is -9.8 degrees.
