The Red Deer District Chamber has expressed deep disappointment and concern over the implementation of 25 per cent tariffs by the U.S. on Canadian imports.

The chamber issued the following response:

“These measures pose significant challenges to our local businesses and the broader Canadian economy.

“We stand in solidarity with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, the federal government, and Alberta's Premier in their unified stance against these unjustified tariffs. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce aptly noted that such abrupt policy shifts severely disrupt business operations, stating, "Businesses can't just switch their whole model to avoid tariffs and then go back again, depending on what politicians decide on any given day.

“Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has condemned the tariffs, describing them as ‘A very dumb thing to do,’ and has announced retaliatory measures, including tariffs on U.S. goods. Similarly, Premier Danielle Smith has voiced strong opposition, emphasizing the detrimental impact these tariffs will have on Alberta's economy.

“In response to these developments, the Red Deer District Chamber reaffirms its commitment to supporting our local business community through dedicated advocacy and ensuring that our members have the resources and support they need during this challenging period. We will continue to provide up-to-date information and advocate on behalf of our business community to mitigate the impact of these tariffs.

"These tariffs threaten the stability of our local industries, many of which rely on cross-border trade," said Scott Robinson, CEO of the Red Deer District Chamber. "While it is clear to us that the federal government had no choice but to impose retaliatory measures, we remain clear, tariffs are simply bad economic policy, and the impacts will be felt by businesses on both sides of the border.”

The chamber is continuing to work with partners at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and advocate for all levels of government to find effective business-friendly solutions.

All chamber members are encouraged to stay informed and participate in upcoming forums and discussions aimed at navigating the implications of the trade developments.
