A support group for men going through divorce and separation has started up again in Central Alberta.

Mike Thibeau is the facilitator of Man-Up Support Group 2.0.

"It's a group that I had started up six or seven years ago because I was dealing with a lot of things with my divorce and with a bunch of different legal issues and I knew that what I was going through, there wasn't a lot of people that I could reach out to," he explained. "There was a lot of questions that I had."

The group is a space for men who are going through struggles with divorce/separation, child custody issues, navigating the legal process, and mental health problems associated with these concerns.

"The biggest issue from before was legal issues because there's so many questions that you have when you find yourself in unfamiliar circumstances and then all of a sudden, you're having to fight for access to your children or you're having to divvy up your assets."

The meetings are free of charge and take place at the Sheldon Kennedy Centre of Excellence in Red Deer. The next meeting is March 11 starting at 7 p.m.

Thibeau says he is working on bringing in speakers to give presentations, including lawyers, councillors, psychologists, business owners, yoga instructors, and gym owners.

He notes they had about 10 to 15 people of all ages show up for the meetings during the first iteration of the Man-up Support Group.

"You have to be in a positive head space if you've got kids, you've got to be positive for them," he added. "You've got to help yourself in order to help your children."
