For almost 20 years, Friends of Guatemala has been hosting fundraising concerts at St. Andrews United Church in Lacombe.
The next concert on March 15 features a pair of duets including Poplar & 51st and Ray Baird and Ol'Frisky.
Funds raised will help a Christian women’s organization in Guatemala called Fraternidad, supporting food security projects in small Mayan villages. Friends of Guatemala has also supported a private health clinic in the past.
Members of the group have travelled to Guatemala in the past to check in on projects and discover other needs.
Doug Maas is a member of Friends of Guatemala.
"When we became aware of the situation in Guatemala, it was disturbing," he said. "The indigenous Mayan people were being marginalized. They were farming the worst possible land in Guatemala up on the highlands. We thought there were some things we can do there to help."
Maas says the fundraising concerts usually attract upwards of 200 people.
The March 15 show starts at 7 p.m. with tickets costing $20. Ages 10 and under are free.
Tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling Doug Maas at 403-318-5733 or the church office at 403-782-3148.
Friends of Guatemala meets the second Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at St. Andrews United Church. Anyone is welcome to join.
