After a recent grass fire, a nearby fire department is asking everybody to be fire-aware, as spring is just around the corner.
On the second to final day of February, the Crossfield Fire Department responded to a small grass fire in Veterans' Park located in the town.
Bill Messner, Fire Chief for the Crossfield Fire Department, shared that what started the fire is still undetermined.
"When we arrived on the scene, it was already mostly out. We did some mop up just to make sure the there were no further hazards."
He explained that as weather is changing, there are more hazards.
"With the warm weather also comes higher wind, so that provides quite a bit more risk to substantial fires."
Messner recommends that those who smoke avoid doing it when you are out and about, or if you are going to do it, just make sure you utilize ashtrays, properly dispose of cigarettes and not throw them out windows.
"Please keep fire safety in the back of your mind, make sure you have the right size fire pits and you use them correntcly. We wish everybody a very fire-safe upcoming spring."
Forestry and Parks Minister Todd Loewen announced earlier this week that Budget 2025 is allocating $160 million for wildfire personnel, equipment, and contracts for aircraft and night vision-equipped helicopters.
About 51 per cent of wildfires in 2024 were caused by people, down from the five-year average of 67 per cent.
