The Portage Terriers ended the Winkler Flyers’ 10 game winning streak on Sunday night beating them 2-1.

The game started fast and physical with Winkler playing their typical brand of tough dump and chase hockey. The Terriers jumped out to an early lead when Decker Mujcin tucked home a short handed goal. Despite getting hemmed in for most of the period, Portage would score again when Rhett Platt finished off a nice one-timer from Breck Hirrschoff. 2-0 Terriers after 1.

The second period was similar to the first, but the Terriers seemed to settle into the style. Penalty trouble caught up with them late in the frame when decker Mujcin was called for a four-minute double minor for high sticking. The Flyers capitalized on the power play and drew to within one.

Ryan Velan looked sharp in the third period turning aside 11 more shots from the Flyers to hold on for the win. Portage was outshot 37-14. The penalty kill was a key part of the night finishing 6/7.

The Terriers still have a chance to move into second if they can win their remaining two games against Niverville and if Steinbach only gets one point in their remaining three games. Portage will travel to Niverville for their next game on Wednesday night at 7:30pm.
