Once a month, St. John the Baptist Parish Hall becomes the hub for music lovers of all kinds during Make Music with Friends. Jason Stepp, who leads the jam sessions, says the event offers an opportunity for musicians to come together, share their love of music, and create a sense of community.

“We gather together once a month, find a date that works for everyone, and make sure it doesn’t conflict with other organizations,” Stepp says. “It’s a time to get together and learn.”

During the sessions, Stepp and other musicians play songs designed for the audience’s enjoyment, including danceable tunes. “We focus on songs people can dance to and enjoy, no matter what style or skill level of musician you are,” he adds.

Musicians from surrounding areas, including Gainsborough and Weyburn, often join the sessions. “We’ve been doing this for nearly three years now,” Stepp says. “It all started with Dave and Anita Jersum and other members of the church. It’s grown since then, and now we’re on Facebook, keeping it going.”

The final jam session before the summer break will take place on Monday, April 21. The group pauses during the holiday season and busy farm months but expects to resume later in the year. “After April, we take a break for the holidays and farm season, but we’ll be back,” Stepp explains.

The events have been successful, with many regular attendees, especially dancers who follow the jam sessions around. “Some even play with us,” says Stepp. “It’s about fellowship, camaraderie, and the healing power of music. It’s a great thing.”

Stepp encourages anyone interested to come and experience the final session before the break. “You don’t have to dance or be from any particular denomination — just come, meet new people, reconnect with old friends, and have fun,” he says.
