The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) unit of the Alberta Sheriffs have shut down a drug house in Innisfail.
Since May 2023, SCAN has received four complaints related to drug and criminal activity occurring at the property.
Complaints included heavy foot and vehicle traffic, people living in a camper parked on the property, and frequent police activity.
From February 2022 to July 2024, Innisfail RCMP members attended the property 53 times for various calls for service.
In June 2024, a search warrant was executed under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act at the property. The search uncovered evidence indicating the property was frequently used for drug-related activities, including scales, torches, and small baggies.
In July 2024, SCAN investigators served a warning letter to the property owner.
From July 2024 to November 2024, complainants contacted the primary investigator more than 60 times about suspected illegal activity occurring at the property.
“Last year alone, the RCMP executed three search warrants at this residence, searching for both stolen property and drugs,” said Ian Ihme, staff sergeant, Detachment Commander of the Innisfail RCMP. “The Innisfail RCMP has a strong partnership with the Alberta Sheriffs and appreciates their work in assisting to target known criminals in our area. We are supportive of all tools that work towards limiting crime in our community.”
A court order has been obtained SCAN against the owner, and the property will be closed for 90 days, beginning today (March 11).
All individuals must vacate the premises, and any tenancy agreements or leases will be terminated.
The community safety order, obtained in the Court of King’s Bench, bars all people from the property until the closure period ends on June 9.
The property will be boarded up and fenced, and all the locks will be changed.
SCAN members will monitor the property for activity while their investigation remains ongoing. Community safety order conditions will remain in effect until June 9, 2027.
“Collaborating with local partners like the RCMP is making a significant difference for community safety across Alberta. SCAN units throughout the province remain dedicated to fighting crime and protecting the safety and well-being of all residents,” said Michael Dirkson, inspector, SCAN.
