Estevan city council has approved Bylaw No. 2025-2089, known as the Unclaimed Personal Property bylaw, which outlines how lost and unclaimed property in the city’s possession will be handled.

During the recent council meeting, Mayor Tony Sernick read the bylaw, which sets out clear guidelines for the disposition of such property.

“Obviously, we want people to have their personal property first and foremost,” Sernick said. “But [this] just gives us a guideline and rules to go by.”

The bylaw states the city will retain all unclaimed personal property for 90 days. If the property is not retrieved within that period, the city is permitted to dispose of it. Perishable items are exempt and may be disposed of immediately.

Councillor Shelly Veroba emphasized the importance of public awareness of the regulation, particularly for those who may have lost property that has come into the city’s possession.

“If the city takes ownership of property or has your property in its possession, you only have those 90 days to come back, and after 90 days, it is disposed of or gotten rid of,” Veroba said.

The bylaw was approved.
