Lacombe has some new outdoor artwork on display.

Four hand-painted fishhooks, created by local artists, have gone up around the city.

Three were installed along the fence near the Len Thompson Fishpond, with another put up near the main entrance to the Fish and Fetch Dog Park.

The pieces were originally part of Lacombe Regional Tourism’s Hidden Fishhooks project from 2022 and 2023.

Lacombe's Arts and Culture Coordinator Maureen MacKenzie says the fishhooks were originally displayed in businesses around the city as part of a scavenger hunt and have now been donated to the local art collection.

"We've double-coated them with a protective sealant and hung them up to see how well they weather with the winter and the summer," she said.

MacKenzie is hoping to receive more painted fishhooks in the future.

"It's always so nice to be able to collaborate with artists and other industries in the area and pull people together through arts and culture," she added.

Lacombe is home to Thompson-Pallister Bait Co. Ltd, manufacturers of the world-famous Land Thompson Lures.

The "World's Largest Fishing Lure", which is also part of the City of Lacombe's art collection, was installed at the Len Thompson Fishpond in 2019 to mark the company's 90th anniversary.

The 2025 Encore Art Sale runs April 11 and 12 at the Lacombe Memorial Centre.

This year's featured artist is Vicki Sullivan, a textile artist from Central Alberta.
