The Sylvan Lake Food Bank received a large donation through the Sobeys “Joy of Giving” fundraiser in December.
Through community donations and a matching donation of $2,000 from Empire Foods, a total of $19,766 was raised.
Shari Britton, Sylvan Lake Food Bank volunteer coordinator, said the funds will be used to purchase fresh produce and dairy products, as well as replenish non-perishable food items.
"It will be used to top up all of the staple items that we put in every hamper,” she said.
Every month, the Sylvan Lake Food Bank distributes between 300 to 350 food hampers.
Britton explained that building the hampers is a community effort, as many local grocery stores provide items.
With ongoing community support, such as local fundraising events, charity checkstops, and school fundraisers, the food bank is able to meet the continued demand for services.
“It's very much driven by the community,” Britton said. “We’ve been fortunate, Sylvan Lake steps up when they are given the opportunity to donate.”
