March 20th is the spring equinox, which marks the halfway point between the winter and summer equinoxes, when the sun comes out at the latest and earliest, respectively. It's a good date to signal the start of spring, although meteorological spring starts March 1st, and some cold and snow could still fall over the next month.
Environment Canada Meteorologist Danielle Desjardins says that the southeast is feeling some better conditions as we're getting a bit of warmth.
"For this time of year, it's a little bit on the warmer side. Normal daytime high is 3° and a low of -8, so we're a little bit above normal for this time of year. Just as a comparison, I just looked up the last year that on the spring equinox, we had a high of 1°, so it's a little bit warmer than last year."
Even though we're seeing some warmth now the volatile spring conditions mean that we're likely to also see chills and snow as well.
"We are going to see the temperatures remain above 0 and tomorrow, a daytime high of 0. So a little bit colder than normal, but there are going to be a few chances actually of some flurries or showers, but at least for the next week or so, I'm not seeing anything significant. So we're looking at a little bit of an unsettled pattern, but it's going to be some of those kind of spotty isolated showers or flurries instead of these big systems that send a big swath of snow over a large chunk of the province.
As those temperatures rise above zero, the fall to freezing overnight, Desjardins reminds people to be careful and watch for icy surfaces.
