Central Alberta voters are being reminded of some changes which will impact the upcoming April 28 federal election.

Across the province, the number of ridings is increasing from 34 to 37.

The boundaries have changed for all of the ridings, with the exception of Lethbridge.

"It's important that people know what electoral district they will be voting in," said Leanne Nyirfa, spokesperson for Elections Canada.

Voters can go to elections.ca and enter their postal code to find out which riding they live in. That information will also be displayed on voter registration cards that will be sent out in the mail.

"Redistribution is done every 10 years and it's done to reflect changes in population," explained Nyirfa. "Elections Canada is not involved in this process, it's an independent commission in 10 provinces that have a look at this and make those changes."

There are four main ways that voters can cast their ballots in the April 28 election:

  • attend your assigned polling station on April 28
  • advance polls are open April 18 to 21 at assigned polling stations
  • mail-in ballot kits are available at elections.ca until April 22
  • you can also vote by special ballot at any Elections Canada office anytime until April 22 (open 7 days a week)

Voters will need to show identification before casting a ballot.

This can include government-issued ID displaying your name, address and photo.

You can also present two other pieces of ID - both must display your name and one must have your current address.

If you can't produce ID, you can have someone who does vouch for you at the same polling station.

It's also a good idea to register beforehand to make the voting process go smoother.
