With the weather switching rapidly from sunny to cold, it's common to hear a few sniffles and coughs due to temperature changes and seasonal allergies.

However, Albertans now have to be prepared for the germs that bring measles, as cases have been popping up across the province since March 13, when provincial officials confirmed a single household infection involving six individuals.

Alberta Health Services has reported that there are now 20 active cases of measles in Alberta, spread across the province:

  • North zone: 9 cases

  • Edmonton zone: 4 cases

  • Central zone: 2 cases

  • South zone: 3 cases

  • Calgary zone: 2 cases

If you are an older Albertan, you were likely vaccinated as a child within your first two years. However, the fear of contracting measles could cause alarm for new parents, pregnant women, or those with existing health concerns who want to avoid exposure.

Alberta Health Services says measles is an extremely contagious disease that spreads easily through the air. Symptoms include:

  • Fever of 38.3°C or higher

  • Cough, runny nose, and/or red eyes

  • A red, blotchy rash that appears three to seven days after the fever starts, typically beginning behind the ears and on the face, and then spreading down the body to the arms and legs

Albertans uncertain about their own or their child's immunization history can text "vaccine record" to 88111, call Health Link at 811, or contact their local public health office.
