Safe Digging Month is officially underway in Saskatchewan, marking the unofficial start to the province’s digging season. The Saskatchewan Common Ground Alliance (SCGA) has teamed up with over 30 sponsors to offer free breakfasts across the province to raise awareness about the importance of safe digging practices and ground disturbance.

Shannon Doka, Executive Director of the SCGA, shared details about the initiative. "Today, we are kicking off the month with our first breakfast in North Battleford, and a colleague of mine is in Moose Jaw. These breakfasts are a great opportunity for people to learn about protecting underground assets and following best practices when it comes to digging," she said.

The breakfasts, which will be held at 23 locations throughout the province, provide a chance for attendees to enjoy a hot meal, watch a 15-minute safety video, and connect with local safety experts. The video highlights key topics relevant to the digging community and serves as an educational tool for participants to consider every time they plan to disturb the ground.

Doka emphasized the resources available on the SCGA website, which offers valuable information on safe digging practices. "We have a wealth of resources on our website that help people understand the best practices when it comes to ground disturbance. Our goal is to plant the seeds for safe digging, and hopefully, it’ll be something people think about before every dig," she explained.

For those interested in attending a breakfast, the SGA’s schedule is packed with events in both the north and south regions of Saskatchewan. Upcoming breakfasts will be held in Prince Albert, Humboldt, Maple Creek, and Regina. Estevan will host its event on April 16.

If you’re interested in attending, registration is easy through the SCGA website. A simple click on the yellow button in the top right corner allows participants to enter their details and select their preferred breakfast location.

“We’re grateful to the community members who prioritize safety and join us at these breakfasts. It’s exciting to see people come together and show their commitment to safe digging,” Doka concluded.
