Team Canada picked up a huge 8-6 win in the morning draw against Sweden at the BKT World Men’s Curling Championship at Temple Gardens Centre.
It was an important game for both teams, as they came into this draw tied in the standings at 3-1.
"Beating Sweden, we were both 3-1, and keeping ourselves at one loss, that’s a huge win for us," added skip Brad Jacobs.
With last rock in the first end, Jacobs was left with an open takeout to score one. However, his shot rolled a little too far, and it was a steal of one for Sweden.
Canada played a strong game, curling 89 per cent as a team.
"We didn’t want to drop two in a row. We knew yesterday afternoon, this morning, and tonight against three of the top teams in the world are going to be tough. So one and one right now, but playing well. Yesterday’s game could have gone either way," said Canada lead Ben Hebert.
Canada rebounded in the second end. Jacobs made a light takeout to score two and take over the lead.
In the third end, with last rock, Sweden skip Niklas Edin had a tapback to score one and tie the game.
A missed run-back double by Edin in the third end led to an open draw for three for Jacobs in the fourth end, as Canada took a 5-2 lead.
With last rock in the fifth end, Edin made a hit and roll to the button for his single point, as Canada led 5-3 at the fifth-end break.
Canada replied in the sixth end. Jacobs made a short double tapback to score one.
Edin made a pair of double takeouts with his skip stones in the seventh end. However, his shooter rolled too far on his second rock, and Sweden was only able to manage one point.
In the eighth, Jacobs made a difficult hit and roll to get out of a jam and score his single point, making it 7-4 for Canada.
Edin made a double takeout with his last rock in the ninth to score two, meaning he needed to steal one in the 10th to force an extra end.
Jacobs was left to peel out the Swedish rock to pick up the 8-6 win.
