The City of Estevan has accepted the application for a new cannabis store in the city, making it the sixth to be approved for development.
City Council discussed that during their latest meeting last week, with land development services manager Richard Neufeld giving his report.
He stated that the store would be located at 420 King Street, in an undeveloped portion of the building that already houses the LB Liquor Store.
All property owners within 75 meters of the building were notified, with Neufeld saying the city has not received any inquiries. He especially noted that it was the first time the city had not received a comment on a cannabis retailer.
Councillor Shelly Veroba said as the Government of Saskatchewan has opened the sale of cannabis with no limits as to the number of retailers, it should be up to customers to decide if another store is needed.
Councillor Tom Mauss raised the question of whether Estevan needed another Cannabis retailer, and voted against the motion to accept the retailer's application, which passed the council with a majority of votes.
