The City of Swift Current is optimistic that the weather will allow for an easy escape from flooding.

The last week of cooler temperatures has granted a slow release of the snowpack, which has aided in averting flooding of the Swift Current Creek. The issue is how the warming temperatures in the forecast for early next week will impact the snowpack in Cypress Hills.

Swift Current Fire Department Fire Chief Ryan Hunter has been in contact with the Water Security Agency, remaining informed on projected runoff amounts that will hit the Duncairn Dam.

"With the weather that's going to be drastically improving Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday of next week, we believe that what snow is left is going to be melting at a faster pace," said Hunter. "So we're still in a holding pattern."

The Chief predicts that the flood waters will flow through without much restrictions, as the possibility of ice damming is very low. He expects that the barriers currently in place, like those near the Lee Lam Bridge in Riverside Park, will be effective in dealing with any of the excess runoff.

"Even if we have to reconsider our position," said Hunter. "We're certainly aware that the weather is playing out in our favour."

Hunter says a media release will be issued if further measures have to be taken or if there is any risk to the general public and those living in flood zones.
