In a historic moment for the Southeast Gold Wings, the team clinched its first-ever provincial championship, overcoming adversity to emerge victorious. Coach Rodney Reid expressed his pride in the team's perseverance, especially after facing numerous challenges throughout the season.
Despite trailing by two goals after the first period of the championship game, the Gold Wings regrouped and focused on their strengths, including their power play, to turn the tide. "We decided to settle down, concentrate on our power play because it's been pretty good all year," Reid said. "There were some jitters or nerves in the first period, but once we got settled in, we went to work."
Heading into the final period with the score tied, Reid's message to the team was clear: "We can't give them the next goal. We just need to settle in and keep going like we have been to seal the win." The Gold Wings responded, holding off their opponents and securing a 4-2 victory.
The post-game celebrations were emotionally charged as players embraced the magnitude of the win. For many, it marked the end of their careers in organized hockey, adding a bittersweet element to the triumph. "There were girls crying because we won, and others crying because their careers were done," Reid said. "But that's what you play the game for, right?"
He also expressed pride in the leadership shown by the players, noting that they set the standard for future generations. "They're leaving as champions, as well as leaders. They set the tone that a small organization can still compete with the big cities."
The Gold Wings' victory was not only a personal achievement for the team but also a victory for the entire community. With fans traveling from neighboring towns like Estevan, Weyburn, and Midale, the rink was packed with supporters. "It was overwhelming to see that many people come out to support the girls," Reid said. "There were people driving 150 kilometers just to watch the game."
The Gold Wings' victory has inspired the next generation of players, showing that with determination and teamwork, anything is possible. As the season wraps up, Reid and the team are already looking forward to the next chapter.
"I think we have 10 players eligible to come back next year," he said. "Now that they know how to win, it's important for us to keep developing and working toward the next challenge."
The Southeast Gold Wings' historic provincial championship win is a testament to their hard work and a reflection of the strength and spirit of their community. As the team celebrates its achievement, the future looks bright.
"I'm just proud of them," Reid concluded. "The perseverance and commitment they showed this year was phenomenal."
