This Sunday, the community will come together to honour the legacy of Logan Boulet and raise awareness for organ and tissue donation at the 4th Annual Green Shirt Day Road Hockey Event.

Co-Founder and organizer Michelle Hounslow says this casual, drop-in road hockey event welcomes participants of all skill levels, with no registration required.

While the focus is on playing hockey and having fun, the event carries a powerful message about the importance of organ and tissue donation.

“Green Shirt Day was created in honour of Logan Boulet, who passed away on April 7, 2018, after the Humboldt Broncos bus crash,” said Hounslow. “His decision to register as an organ donor saved six lives and inspired over 100,000 Canadians to sign up as donors. His parents, Toby and Bernie, have continued to share his message and encourage others to have conversations about organ donation.”

The event has grown over the years, attracting not only hockey enthusiasts but also organ recipients, donors, and families of those impacted by transplants.

“There have been years where we’ve had multiple organ donors and recipients attending, sharing their stories and connecting with others,” said Hounslow. “It’s a meaningful time for those in the transplant community to come together and for others to learn about the impact of organ donation in a way that’s engaging and kid-friendly.”

In addition to hockey, attendees can participate in trivia games and learn more about the organ donation process through interactive activities. Green shirts will be available for purchase at the event, with proceeds supporting organ donor awareness efforts.

“We encourage everyone to wear green, light up their homes with green lights, or display a hockey stick outside their doors on April 7 to honour the Humboldt Broncos and Logan’s legacy,” Hounslow added.

The event will take place at the the Spray Lake Sawmills (SLS) Centre fieldhouse parking lot on April 6, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. It will be outdoors weather permitting or moved indoors if necessary.
