Another Estevan hockey team has closed up shop for the season, after being part of a great playoff run. The U18 AA Estevan Apex Bruins managed to make it to their league finals, before losing in two games to the Martensville Marauders.
The first game saw them fall 2-1 in overtime back in March, before they lost another game this weekend.
Head Coach Aren Miller talks about what went well and what didn't for the team.
"Saturday night here, they got a couple of goals early, and we scored a power play goal to make it 2-1. They ended up pulling away 4-1, and we ended up losing. Kids played hard, they just found a way and got some breaks, and we didn't get them."
The team wasn't thrilled about the loss, having managed to accrue a 17-7-3-5 record over the regular season.
Miller says that the team was riding high after becoming the South Sask division champs with a victory earlier in the year, and being brought down by the loss isn't great.
"Sometimes it's tough to switch gears where you're celebrating one weekend and then you've got to get back on the ice and start practicing right away."
This year's Apex Bruins is a younger team, with only six players advancing out of the league for next year's season.
That means Miller is confident they can carry this season's performance into next year for an even better result.
"There's a ton of potential for next year's team. Especially at the start of the year, we had a younger team and didn't get off to a great start, and we kind of knew that. The kids learned throughout the year what it takes to play at that level and ended up going on some big winning streaks and finishing second."
Miller says that getting as far as they did was a huge accomplishment for the team that they can be proud of.
