The provincial government and smaller organizations like the Saskatchewan Association for Rural Municipalities have been in discussions around how to best deal with derelict buildings in RMs, and a new piece of legislation may be the key for that.
Earlier this year, the province discussed utilizing volunteer fire departments that could use the derelict buildings for practice, clearing away the land and providing an opportunity to help them trade.
The province is moving ahead with that plan following amendments being introduced to The Construction Codes Act. According to the province, those would work to support their pilot framework, assisting municipalities in dealing with derelict structures.
"Municipalities are in the best position to ensure the long-term safety and prosperity of their communities," said Government Relations Minister Eric Schmalz. "By updating this legislation to support our derelict buildings pilot framework, the Government of Saskatchewan is helping local leadership practically and effectively address the challenges posed by municipally-owned derelict properties."
“Derelict buildings and yard sites are not only an eyesore but also threaten community safety," said Bill Huber, SARM President, back in February. "SARM invites the provincial government to step up and assist in the removal and remediation of these buildings." At the SARM's annual convention in March, the provincial government announced the pilot framework and how it would help rural municipalities and provide a training opportunity for local volunteer fire departments.
"We have heard from SARM, SUMA and other municipal leaders that have asked for this opportunity to provide training scenarios for our world-class volunteer firefighters that are the cornerstone of our rural communities," said Environment Minister Travis Keisig. "We look forward to seeing the continued collaboration that will benefit many across our province."
More information on the pilot framework's parameters and details will be available in summer 2025 following development work with partnering ministries and agencies.
