The CobraCats girls rugby team played a tune-up match against the Croxford Cavaliers on Wednesday night in preparation for their season opener on April 15.

Spirits ran high during the game, capped off by special player-of-the-game presentations from head coach Sinead Byrne.

“Everyone’s having fun,” said Byrne. “All the positivity has been awesome, and we’re just so excited for all the new players and how well they did. They meshed with the experienced players so well for their first game. We’re very excited to see what’s going to happen.”

The team gathered for their first team shot of the season at the end of the match.

On April 15, both the boys and girls CobraCats host their season openers at the Cochrane High turf. The boys play at 5 p.m., followed by the girls at 6:30 p.m.

Like the rest of the rugby community, Byrne is enjoying the growth of the sport at the high school level.

"For the last couple of years we only had two teams in our zone and now we have five," she points out. "So now it's way more competitive because we have to beat all those teams to reach provincials."

This Friday, the CobraCats will be rallying around the fun nature of the sport with a Rugby Dress-Up Rumble from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Bow Valley artificial turf. Players will be dolled up for the event and the crowd is encouraged to come in costume as well.

There will be food, refreshments and a raffle, with all proceeds supporting two athletes — one from Cochrane High and one from Bow Valley.

It’s expected to be a fun-filled event.
