The CobraCats high school rugby teams are embracing the fun-loving spirit of the rugby community with a Seniors Dress Up Rumble this Friday afternoon.
The event takes place from 2 to 6 p.m. at the SLS Legacy Sportsfield, located next to Bow Valley High School.
Players will take the field dressed to impress for some 7s touch rugby—and fans are encouraged to get in on the action by showing up in costume, too.
CobraCats Taia Graham and Sienne Showman say both the boys’ and girls’ teams will be suiting up in dresses for the game.
“Rugby culture is about having fun and doing things like this,” they said. “The boys will wear dresses, the girls will wear dresses—it’s all part of the fun.”
Spectators are welcome to wear any costume they like—gowns are optional.
Taia, who attended the Vancouver Sevens, knows how creative fans can get.
“My family dressed up like Hawaiians with tie-dye skirts. People were wearing colourful blow-up balloons and tiaras. There were Spidermans, Minions, Smurfs—you name it. You don’t have to wear a gown. Just have fun with it!”
The event will also feature food, snacks, and beverages, along with a 50/50 raffle. Proceeds will support one athlete each from Bow Valley and Cochrane High.
The CobraCats girls team is coming off an exhibition game last night against the Croxford Cavaliers and say there’s real momentum building on and off the field.
“I feel like we’ve got a really good group this year, and the new players are really getting into it,” said Sienne.
“It’s definitely improved. In past years we had a quiet team—this year I’ve never heard our team cheer so loud,” added Taia.
