The Lions Club of Wakaw will soon commemorate its 75th anniversary — a distinguished diamond milestone that honors three-quarters of a century dedicated to service, leadership, and community building.

On Saturday May 3, the Lions Club in Wakaw will be recognizing the occasion with an event that invites the entire community to celebrate the important milestone.

Some of the ongoing community the Lions Club is involved with include the local Food Bank and the Wakaw Lions Park.

Recently, the Lions Club raised over $200,000 for the spray park in Wakaw.

During the holiday season, they’re also involved with Santa Claus Days.

In the past, they’ve been involved with bingo that used to happen on a weekly basis but has been scaled back.

They also used to run the theatre in Wakaw.

Vice-President Steve Skoworodko says the Lions Club prides itself on giving back.

“We've been very integrated and part of the club and part of the community for 75 years. We're kind of a social club, which also then gives back to the community and you know, our model is, you know, that we serve. And so that's always what kind of leads us to go around and not as we serve the community and the best that we can.”

He added the food bank is an example of the Lions Club stepping in to provide a valuable service for the town.

“That’s an ongoing program for us. In these hard economic times, it’s a program that the Lions Club saw the necessity in the community.”

Currently in Wakaw, there are 15 members, and five new members will be inducted during the 75th celebration.

Skoworodko credits the organization’s founders for forging a path for the Lions Club to prosper.

“I think it was all back to our kind of our foundation and how the club was laid in the community and a lot of the founding members that that really got a good start for lions and then the ongoing support from Lions International and just kind of what their stand is and what the model is.”

The 75th celebration on Saturday May 3 falls on the official anniversary date of the Wakaw Lions Club. Kiefer and Amanda Paul will be performing along with a program and a dance to follow.

Anyone that is interested in attending can contact any Lions Member.
