The southeast is set to enjoy a day of summer-like temperatures, but this weekend we'll see quite the switch as a cold and wet system strolls by. A Colorado low is set to hit the area and bring rain and a drop in temperatures, beginning partway through the weekend.
Environment Canada meteorologist Stephen Berg talks about the system expected to hit us soon.
"There's a bit of a Colorado low that's coming up from the southwest towards Minnesota and the southeastern part of North Dakota. That brings some precipitation for the southeastern part of Saskatchewan."
Berg expects the precipitation to be first introduced to us as rain, potentially changing into snow as the temperatures get close to freezing by Sunday. The system is predicted to dump around 10-25 millimeters of rain, along with a few centimeters of snow.
With all of the cold air and moisture falling, Berg warns people to watch for black ice forming on roads following the weekend rain.
"With this rain that's coming, there might be some rain that falls onto the roadways and surfaces that freeze and kind of generate some icy conditions. So people out on the roads will have to be really careful with that if they're out driving during the evening and overnight hours, in the early morning as well."
A bit of good news is that following the rain, we'll be out of the colder system and into a pattern that's more predictable.
"Looks a little bit more steady state with temperatures into the low to mid double digits for daytime highs," said Berg. "It doesn't really look like a lot in terms of precipitation beyond this system. Overnight lows still dipping down close to the zero mark, so you might end up getting some occasional icy conditions here and there."
With the potential for reduced visibility and slippery roads this weekend, Berg reminds everyone to keep an eye on the conditions as the weekend progresses. You can do so by heading to Discover Estevan's CARSTAR Hail-Otto Weather Page.
