RCMP are investigating a recent theft that targeted a local small business in downtown Cochrane.

Several promotional lawn signs belonging to Horse Creek Candy, Gifts & Chocolate Shoppe were stolen on Saturday, April 5, leaving shop owner Cherie Hill frustrated and seeking answers.

According to Hill, surveillance images and video footage clearly captured the suspect taking the signs and discarding them, and all materials have been passed along to Mounties for investigation.

“There is a RCMP investigator who has all the imagery,” Hill said. “Hopefully she’ll be able to go to the business the individual came out of, it happened at 10:13 a.m., and that could be the easiest way to identify him.”

Hill says she’s been given permission to post the footage to social media, and hopes someone may recognize the suspect.

“All I’m really looking for is reimbursement,” she said. “This cost me money, I just want my money back.”

The signage, which featured lighthearted, family-friendly messages, was intended to bring attention to her store’s new location in Historic Downtown Cochrane. Hill says the theft feels personal.

“They were super cute little signs, nothing political or offensive,” she said. “It kind of felt targeted. Why? Why take all of them up and down the street?”

Hill has owned the business since 2019 and recently moved to a new location in early 2025. Despite the setback, she remains committed to growing her business in Cochrane.

“We had discussions about leaving when we had to move, but Cochrane has been good to us. We want to grow roots here,” said Hill. “I love our new spot, right between a comic book store, a skateboard shop, and a pizza place. It’s perfect.”
