The Saskatchewan Health Authority is warning the public of possible measles exposure at the following Regina locations on April 9:
-
Bass Pro Shop (910 Gordon Rd): 3:15 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
-
Walmart Superstore (4500 Gordon Rd): 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Anyone who visited these places during the listed times should monitor for symptoms for 21 days after exposure.
Common measles symptoms include:
-
Fever
-
Cough
-
Runny nose
-
Red eyes
-
Small white spots in the mouth (Koplik spots)
-
A red, blotchy rash that usually starts on the face and spreads downward
If you develop symptoms and were at one of the locations, do not go to a clinic or ER in person. Instead, call HealthLine 811 or contact your doctor for advice. You may be eligible for preventive treatment within six days of exposure.
Measles is highly contagious and spreads through the air. The virus can linger in a room for up to two hours after an infected person leaves. People are contagious from four days before to four days after the rash appears, and should remain in strict isolation during this time.
Vaccination is the best protection. The measles vaccine is safe, free, and nearly 100% effective with two doses. Check your immunization status through MySaskHealthRecord or speak with your health care provider.
