Another Saturday night at Art Concepts saw a celebration of Canadian music, featuring a stripped-down acoustic performance by SCMA Band of the Year Munro & Patrick. The duo delivered a nostalgic set of Canadian rock favourites, while also shining a spotlight on original music from homegrown talent.
With a focus on highlighting the uniqueness of Canadian artistry, Munro reflected on the timing and significance of the show.
“I think in the political climate at the moment, the way all Canadians are feeling, and us being in the music industry, you know the arts industry seems to get hit a little differently — I don’t want to say harder, but different challenges — and we wanted to celebrate that because there is a lot of extremely underrated country music,” said Munro.
“There’s a lot of music we haven’t even been able to touch and just celebrate originality and being Canadian, and it was very important to us,” she added.
Known for keeping their live sets fresh, Munro & Patrick often rotate their song choices to suit different crowds. During their set, the duo didn’t just focus on their own originals; they also paid tribute to Canadian rock legends. The crowd was treated to acoustic renditions of iconic tracks, from Patio Lanterns to Santa Maria, evoking memories of classic Canadian tunes and engaging the audience in a sing-along.
“Learning new songs, it sometimes takes a little bit of work, but we always have fun doing it, and it’s nice to kind of add to our set lists and be able to do a whole bunch of varieties for different audiences,” said Munro.
Their performance marked a return to a familiar stage. The pair have built a strong relationship with Art Concepts and its audiences over the years.
“We love playing in southeast Saskatchewan — especially love playing here at Art Concepts. It’s always fun. We’ve done, I would say, this is probably our fourth show that we’ve done here, so it’s always fun. Byron and Teresa are great hosts and they put on a great event,” said Scott Patrick.
Reflecting on their long-standing career and Saskatchewan roots, Munro emphasized the importance of community support in sustaining their work.
“Scott and I have been pretty consistent for many years. I want to say decades, but it’s the music industry and arts industry in general — they are very challenging to be consistent in — and we’ve been very fortunate to be able to sort of withstand that and to keep relevant, and to have a lot of special people and venues that keep supporting us and that keep asking us to come back, and it’s great because a lot of people don’t have that,” she said.
The night also included a preview of the duo’s latest single, Let It Slide, which will officially release on April 21.
“We have a couple of songs that we recorded in B.C. in November, so we’ve got that. And then the cover of Raised on Robbery by Joni Mitchell coming, in a couple of months after, so album plans not really, but we’re taking it song by song and see where it goes,” said Munro.
Looking ahead, Munro & Patrick will hit the road again this summer, heading west to British Columbia for a mix of duo shows and a full-band headlining slot at Kelowna Westside Days.
