After years of engineering work, environmental studies, public consultation, regulatory reviews and appeals, the Town of Blackfalds is moving forward with a major infrastructure project that supports sustainable growth and environmental stewardship in partnership with Lacombe County.

At its regular meeting on April 8, Blackfalds town council awarded the construction contract for the Northwest (NW) Stormwater Project to Northside Construction.

Construction is scheduled to begin in July 2025, with the bulk of the work taking place over the summer months. The project is expected to be completed in 2026.

The NW Stormwater Project will serve as the foundation for existing and future stormwater pond systems in the town’s northwest area. It is a critical step toward supporting responsible development while ensuring long-term management of both water quality and quantity.

The new system will help protect local ecosystems, manage runoff efficiently and return treated water safely to the natural basin.

“This is a major milestone for the town and an investment in our community’s environmental resilience and infrastructure capacity,” said Preston Weran, director of infrastructure and planning services.

More information is available on the Town of Blackfalds website.
