According to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), the last CCR payment for individuals will begin being issued on April 22, 2025.

"On March 15, 2025, the Government of Canada stopped the federal fuel charge and the Carbon Rebate for individuals," The CRA noted on its website.

Deadline has passed for April deposit

To receive the payment in April, individuals must have filed their 2024 income tax and benefit return electronically by April 2, 2025. Those who file after that date will still receive the payment, but only after their 2024 return is assessed.

"There will be no further quarterly CCR payments after the April payment."

Final amounts for Alberta

The CRA lists the April 2025 CCR amounts for Alberta as follows:

Base amount:

  • $228 for an individual

  • $114 for a spouse or common-law partner

  • $57 per eligible child under the age of 19

  • $114 for the first eligible child in a single-parent family

Rural supplement (20% of the base amount):

  • $45.60 for an individual

  • $22.80 for a spouse or common-law partner

  • $11.40 per eligible child under the age of 19

  • $22.80 for the first eligible child in a single-parent family

"The rural supplement is 20% of the base amount." — CRA

These are one-time amounts. No additional CCR payments will be issued after April.

CRA recovering overpayments

Some Canadians who were not eligible for the rural supplement received it in error. The CRA says it will begin recovering those amounts.

"To maintain a fair and equitable tax system, the CRA is required to recover any overpayments or payments made in error," The CRA said.

Impacted individuals will receive an official notification starting April 15, 2025.

These clawbacks relate to rural supplement payments issued before June 22, 2024, when the government reversed its position, raised the supplement from 10 to 20 per cent, and reverted eligibility back to 2016 Census classifications.

Retroactive rural top-up in October

The June 2024 change means individuals previously deemed ineligible for the rural supplement under 2021 Census data may now qualify again under the 2016 rules.

"The increased supplement and retroactive payments from April and July will be issued together in October’s payment."

Who qualifies

You are eligible for the CCR if, at the start of the payment month:

  • You are a resident of Canada in the previous month

  • You are a resident of an applicable province on the first day of the payment month: Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan

  • You are either:

    • At least 19 years old, or

    • Under 19 and have a spouse/common-law partner or are a parent living with your child

"The CCR is not available in the following provinces and territories: British Columbia, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Quebec, Yukon."

If your child is registered for the Canada Child Benefit or GST/HST credit, a CCR amount will be included for each eligible child.

No need to apply

Canadians who file a tax return do not need to apply separately for the CCR.

"Residents of Canada don’t need to apply to receive the CCR. They need to file their income tax and benefit return and we will send them the payments they are entitled to."

Only one spouse or partner in a household will receive the CCR, based on whose return is assessed first.

Newcomers to Canada must apply manually using the appropriate CRA forms.

Claiming the rural supplement

To receive the rural supplement, eligible individuals must tick the box on page 2 of their tax return.

"If you are eligible for the rural supplement, but forgot to claim it on your income tax and benefit return, simply tick the box on page 2 on a copy of your income tax and benefit return and mail it to your tax centre or contact us at 1-800-387-1193 to apply."

For Prince Edward Island residents, the rural supplement is already included and does not need to be claimed separately.

If both partners are eligible, both should complete the rural supplement question to avoid delays.

Income doesn’t affect amount

The CRA confirms that the CCR is not income-tested.

"Family income does not affect your payment amount."

However, any CCR payment may be used to offset money owed to the federal or provincial government.

"The CRA does not charge or give interest on any rebate overpayments or underpayments."

What can change your payment

The CRA says your payment amount can change if your circumstances change, including:

  • Moving provinces

  • Marriage, divorce or change in marital status

  • A child turning 19

  • A new child in your care

  • Custody changes

  • Death of a recipient

  • Incarceration for 90 or more consecutive days

Keeping CRA account information up to date is key to ensuring the correct amount.
